Located along the northern coast of South America, Venezuela is a land of everything beautiful, from breathtaking seashores to lush Amazon rainforests. But recently what has been becoming the country's highlight is its coffee! Popular for its quality and unique flavor, Venezuelan coffee has recently seen growth in previous years. In this blog, let’s discover the rich heritage of Venezuelan coffee, its types, challenges, and how a brand like Ecotact with its hermetically sealed coffee bags can be the optimum coffee packaging solution.

Spotlight on Venezuelan Coffee

Coffee production in Venezuela began in the late 18th and early 19th century. Mostly Venezuelan coffee grows at altitudes of 1,000 to 1,800 meters, while sometimes reaching up to 2,000 meters. The potential for world-class coffee production in Venezuela has always been huge, given its climate, topography, and history. In fact, at one time, Venezuela ranked close to Colombia in coffee production and in the 1830s, Venezuela was the third largest coffee exporter in the world. Notably, during the 1980s, Venezuelan agronomists developed remarkable coffee hybrids such as Villanueva 27, Inia 01, Montecarlo, Araguaney, and Bronceado, showcasing their innovation and expertise in coffee cultivation.

Eventually, various reasons led to a decline in coffee production and the growth of cacao beans as well. Among various geological reasons, poor farming practices in the later years also led to soil erosion and hence a gradual decline of the coffee industry in Venezuela. Over the period, the government of Venezuela introduced policy regulations like fixing procurement price limits for growing coffee, which also restricted the production of coffee in the country. All these changes resulted in Venezuela losing its position as one of the world's largest coffee exporters but interestingly, Venezuela is now rejoicing in its growing coffee culture.

Making A New Mark

In recent decades, however, Venezuela has been producing a variety of coffee with unique flavors and aromas. For instance, Hacienda el Recreo is one of the first estates in Venezuela to process these new varieties for specialty coffee nationally, and the results have been astounding. Some of their interesting variety includes INIA 01 which has a lot of potential and is a blend of 9 types of various arabicas, including Geisha, Catimor, and Caturras amongst others. Another pivotal Venezuelan variety is Colombia 27! It doesn't actually come from Colombia – but from Venezuela and was developed in the year 2000. It is an interesting hybrid with a good body, with cashew fruit-like notes and high astringency.

Another thrilling point is that the Caripe variety has been lately included in the catalog of world-recognized varieties by World Coffee Research as the first Venezuelan variety scientifically recognized by this organization. Among its main characteristics, its cup profile stands out to be sweet and fruity, with notes of panela, caramel, citrus fruits, and plum. In addition, it has a smooth body and offers versatility in roasting.

While each of these coffee types holds a crucial flavor, it is important to ensure that the flavor remains intact as well, during transit and storage stages. That’s where the importance of advanced packaging solutions like Ecotact comes in, which with its optimal green coffee bean bags ensures the quality, taste, and aroma stays fresh.
